Impious Prayer
I drink too much. I smoke from time to time. And I use words your ears and eyes are better off not seeing or hearing from me
What words do the faithful put in their prayers?
I’m afraid I have none
I’m afraid I can’t close my eyes
Marry my hands to one another
Part my lips
And move my soul to speak
Without the poison of my tongue burning my fingers where the rings would be
And ashing my lips where love once kissed them.
The book is boring
The commandments forgettable
The sinning is easy
And stories I have more than a few
Stricken in the face
Arriving home laughing
Indifferent to the nature of my own suffering
What words do the faithful put in their prayers?
Share them with me so I might borrow but a few letters
The suffering is boring
The stories are forgettable
Perhaps,
Maybe just a little
I envy the faithful
