Familiar Faces

I know I’ve seen your face before
Perhaps yesterday, perhaps a long time ago
In a half remembered dream
With Edgar screaming that “nothing we see is as it seems”
I’ve seen you in thoughts of the wishes I never made
I know I’ve seen you somewhere running
about my head before my bedroom sheets were laid.
I reached out to touch you and caress your cheek
Right before contact you moved your supple lips to speak.
As though to warn me of what would follow
In the next moment I found my palms hollow
I saw you again just beyond arms length
I moved towards you with love and lust and all my strength
At last, exhausted, I drop to my knees in incredible sorrow
I drop to my knees realising now that your face looks something like tomorrow
A promise never out of sight nor within reach
A promise so great it belongs in any good politician’s speech
I look to the stars asking you to meet me there some day
I look down at the soil and imagine that in a gentle whisper you say “okay”
